BENTON COUNTY.

Accident—Building—Stabbing Affair—Local News.

SAUK RAPIDS, Minn., Feb. 5th, 1871.

EDITOR JOURNAL.—The Sociable at the residence of Mr. Russell, given by the Society of the Congregationalists, passed off very pleasantly. Music, vocal and instrumental, was one of the many pleasant features of the evening.

Ezra Smith, Esq., of St. George, met with a painful accident on Saturday last, by cutting his left foot.

Sleighing is now pretty good, and the stages make their regular trips to Crow Wing and Brainard, on runners.

Mr. A. J. Johnson is building a fine residence on Grand Street, which, when completed, will be an ornament to our town.

Richard Cronk, Esq., late Surveyor on the N. P. R. R. above Brainard, who was very ill, is now rapidly recovering.

The Russell and Lufkin Houses are still crowded with guests. The cars arrive daily with numbers of passengers for the Northern Pacific above Brainard.

Hon. John Hughes, of Colorado, arrived in town last week.

A dancing school is to be organized here before long, under the charge of Prof. T. E. Fozier, of Clear Water. He will doubtless meet with success.

The proprietors of the Russell House are having a large quantity of ice put up for summer use.

It is rumored that a serious stabbing affray took place about one mile above Crow Wing, between three intoxicated half breeds.

A new billiard hall will be started here early in the spring. There are enough saloons in Sauk Rapids now, without additional ones.

The flouring mill of Arnold & Stanton is still running at Le Sauk, and is manufacturing some of the best brands of flour to be found in the state.

Work on the water-power dam will be resumed by the first of May, according to current reports.

The story, "The Poison of Asps," now appearing in the columns of THE JOURNAL is really very interesting. Your paper deserves its reputation of being one of the best and most enterprising newspapers in Minnesota.
